This week I was blown away by Susan Boyle, whose performance I watched on YouTube, along with two million others. Susan Boyle YouTube This wrecked me in the very best way. I've returned to watch the video more than once. I am so moved by the whole thing, but I couldn't put my finger on exactly why until today.
Since we are buried under two feet of wet, spring snow, I've had more time to knock around Facebook and saw a comment on Susan's performance.
"so happy for her - but also for what she represents... you know, it's never over - never."
Yes! That's it!
As someone who has had little success in seeing my own dreams realized as an artist, there is something so hopeful about the whole thing. In an industry that markets, yay even prizes teenaged angst, it was so glorious to see Susan, coming just as she is in the glorious ordinary, operating in her sweet spot and sticking it to the man.
It gives me courage, as I begin to finally make my own sound. It's never over...never.
